Teaching The Send Out Using The Traffic Cone

Many times we need to send our dogs out to an area. One of the best ways to do that is to teach the dog to touch the top of a traffic cone or something similar. We start out close up so we can reward the dog at the source this gives the dog clarity as to what the object of the game is. Once we start to make the connection for the dog that we want him to touch the cone we start to add distance. I take short steps backwards when the dog goes in to touch the cone adding distance. We rested and then came back for session two just a few minutes later. There is an obvious increase in drive so we increased the speed and distance. We will continue to work this and build distance.
